About me and my life as a David Gemmell fan

About 10 years ago, I was managing a book store. One night while closing and straightening up the books, I was also browsing the fantasy section for a new book to read. I came across Legend, read the back, and thought it sounded good. Before I knew it, I had read all of Gemmell's books up to that point. Ordering a few of those titles was an incredible pain in the butt...even for one such as me who was "on the inside" in the book business. I even ordered a few extras and made a nice David Gemmell display. So when a new Gemmell book came out, I picked it up. And I savored every one! I even got my wife hooked on his books.

I used to play an MMOG called Everquest and met a very good friend from England named Ash. We were both delighted to find out that we were both Gemmell fans and laughed that some of our characters were named after Gemmell's characters. Our friendship grew over the next couple of years and one day we received a package in the mail from him. He had gone to a David Gemmell book signing and got us a signed copy (to both me and my wife) of White Wolf. Needless to say, we were shocked and it is one of our most treasured possessions. I truly regret that I wasn't able to meet David Gemmell in person.

The years went by and as I finished with my latest Gemmell book, I would immediately start over and reread all the rest. I have literally read some of his books over 15 times (less for the newer ones obviously, but that number is climbing!). Then I had the brilliant idea of seeing if there were any David Gemmell fan communities out there. Did a quick search and came across Gemmell Mania (www.gemmellmania.co.uk). I signed up, became a member of the community, and met some great people. I had a blast discussing the various themes and storylines in his books with others who were just as much rabid fans as I am.

Then came the day that it was announced that the forums on Gemmell Mania would be shut down. The forum community was shocked and I took it upon myself to start another fan site with forums so the community could still meet and discuss Gemmell's work (among other things). Thus Legend Readers was born (www.legendreaders.com). The name is a play on the term Legend Riders from The Swords of Night and Day. The site is now just over a year old and going strong. I had a lot of fun scouring the internet for various David Gemmell related material and was suprised to find Gemmell inspired music, fan art, and even a ZX Spectrum console game based on Legend from 1984. I gathered up all that I could and presented it on Legend Readers. I also linked to every Gemmell related site that I could find. I even managed to buy a copy of the ZX Spectrum game Legend on ebay (no idea if it even works...I don't have a ZX Spectrum).

So that is my life as a David Gemmell fan in a nutshell. I am still rereading his books over and over and I don't see myself stopping. And I plan to keep Legend Readers up as long as I am alive.
