I just wrote a comment on The Painted Man and then read through all the other comments and there you are! So, I thought I'd add a little more.......
I made a few comments about Arlen needing development......I work in social care and in my work have become familiar with various theories used in this field, particularly socio-ecological theory, family systems theory and attachment theory.
For a quick reference, my current bible (as I am a lazy reader) is David Howe (2005) Child Abuse and Neglect: Attachment, Development and Intervention - Palgrave macmillan.
For me, I understood that Arlen (when we meet him) is of an age to be seeking his own identity and his realisation of his father's weakness is a watershed for him......but the rejection of his father and the community is an enormous leap.... I wanted more meat on them bones!
Likewise, with your female characterisations, you hit the elements attachments well.............I just want more to chew on.
Having said all that, I thought the pace was great and this IS a great debut.
Welcome Peter - and Congratulations on your Nomination! We hope you'll enjoy feeling a part of something very special, this being the inaugural year of the Award. Once things get going in the Forums, feel free to pop into your own dedicated thread for a chat with readers!
