Damn they could both bring things to the role.
But I would save Philip Seymour Hoffman for another character, as he has a wider range.

I've been thinking a lot about who could play Druss lately. There have been some really good suggestions but none really seem perfect to me. As I mentioned earlier, I've always thought James Cosmo would suit the part - but then I look at the graphic novel again and I change my mind.

You could play it safe by casting the usual suspects for the role. Part of me wants to see someone you'd never expect try to do Druss justice. I often lean towards wrestlers when I think of Druss, mainly because of his build.

What are your thoughts on a wrestler playing Druss? Would you prefer an actor? How much of Druss's appearance makes him what he is? I'll keep searching until I find the right guy... if anyone has any new suggestions I'd love to hear them.

I can't really see anyone but Ryan Reynolds playing Rek. Each time I read it, I see him in the role. I'm not talking about the love / comedy roles that Reynolds has played - more like his appearance in The Amytiville Horror remake and Blade 3. He has charm, is tall and well built - can play a comedic role and a serious role rather well and isnt that well known to over shadow whoever ends up being Druss.

I also assume that Chow Yun Fat is the obvious choice for Ulric? Maybe Dalip Singh Rana as Nogusha. I'd go with Bruce Locke for Ogasi and the oldest living asian actor I could find for Nosta Khan.

I dont like Ryan Renolds, but he would be perfect for that role.

For Nosta Khan? He would have been perfect, sadly he passed away in 2006. Nosta Khan isnt in the story that much, so its not overly crucial. I was going to suggest Pat Morita from the Karate Kid, but I just read that he too passed away in 2005. James Hong would be a good choice, but I doubt he'd accept the role.

Plenty to view on Ward's site......I think your choices for the ladies are a bit "obvious" and there are too many pretty boys......Rufus Sewell for Serbitar is absolutely inspired though. Ryan Reynolds? Yes, he's good but I've seen Van Wilder and I cannot take him seriously. How about Terence Stamp for Nosta Khan?

Part of the problem is having to remember the age of the characters, for example Virae is 19.

I'm taking all suggestions seriously, so if you have better ones let me know and I'll add them if I can see that they're better. I added Christopher Lee as Earl Delnar on dros's suggestion. Virae is tough. I want her to look capable - like she really is the daughter of a man who loves war. Most of the women in acting today are too feminine to portray her. As for Odette Yustman in the role of Caessa, I'm a bit bias there - I think she's gorgeous so I'd probably find a role for her in any movie I was casting for. The comic says she's Sathuli - but I couldnt find that in the book. I might go for Jessica Lucas if she really is Sathuli.
I'm surprised no one has picked on James Cosmo for Druss. If anyone has a better Druss I'd love to hear it - the whole movie falls apart if he's cast incorrectly. Despite James having incredible screen presence, he's just not strong enough (muscle wise) to deliver. Someone Scottish would be perfect.

Also, Ryan Reynolds has had some dud roles. I'll be the first to admit that. I didnt like him until I watched The Amityville Horror where he plays a serious role. I've also heard that he's pretty good as Wade Wilson (Deadpool) in the new Wolverine movie. Think baresark when you watch it and you may agree with me.
