The David Gemmell Legend Awards

So who which actors would play which characters.
I'm thinking the head viking in 'the 13th warrior' to play Druss!
What do you think?

My first post. I would like this film to be directed by Danny Boyle with Stan Nicholls and myself at the helm as Casting Directors. This could be filmed near lake Vosso in Norway.

To cast Legend in my opinion you would need an actor who is in his thirties who can be 'made up' to look older. This would pave the way for any Chronicle/legend of Deathwalker pre-quels. The actor would have to be fresh faced and supported by a british 'Drenai' cast.

Abalyn - Richard E Grant
Nosta Kahn - Ben Kingsley
Ulric - Viggo Mortensen

Rek - Richard Armitage
Virae - Laura Haddock

Serbitar - Paul Bettany
Vintar - Gary Oldman
Orrin - Timothy Spall

Bowman - Tom Ellis
Calvar Syn - Bill Nighy
Gilad - Jonas Armstrong
Breggan - Simon Pegg

Ogassi - Ray Winstone
Nagussha - Asmund Brede
Caessa - Rachel Weisz

and finally introducing....

Scott Adkins as Druss

I'd change a fair few of your castings here Jon. I'd have:

Abalyn - Rutger Hauer
Nosta Kahn - Ben Kingsley (could work very well)
Ulric - Tadanobu Asano

Rek - Gerry Butler
Virae - Miranda Otto

Delnar - Christopher Lee
Serbitar - Paul Bettany (could work quite well)
Vintar - Jeffrey Dean Morgan
Orrin - David Wenham

Bowman - Jude Law?
Gilad - Sean Pertwee
Breggan - Me

Ogassi - Jet Lee
Nogusha - Conan Stevens?
Caessa - Sienna Miller?

I thought about throwing Jude law into the equation but i could not really see him as the warrior type. Conan stevens is a big lad :) would make a good adversary for Mr Adkins.

Hello y'all!

It's been a while....I've been licking my wound of not being able to get to the 1st Award Ceremony. In my misery, I turned to Sci Fi to watch "Legend of the Seeker" or perhaps better entitled "The Reason Why David's work can never be made, cos look what they did to Terry Goodkind's"

As a some time fan of the Dune mini-series, I am bitterly dissapointed........having said that (and don't tell my wife) I'm still watching LotS .......Shame on me!

So, how can this travesty be avoided, should Legend ever be incarnated for the screen, large or small?

To be honest Phil, anything thats made to film from the original format is going to upset at least some people. So no matter what you do theres going to be a percentage of people who will always moan.

The best thing that can be done is to get a director who loves the series, a writer who understands and will take a stand on whats important over dumbing down for the uninitated and a good enough budget to give the scenes what they need. Other than that you want actors who can comprehend the roles that they're to play (for example DDL who stood in a river for hours to get the right feeling for his role as Hawkeye.)

Then and only then will you get something that will probably please a large number of fans that might also appeal to the general film going public. To avoid a travesty is going to be the hardest thing of all as everyones vision is different as to what they'll expect from the film.

Absolutely, Dros! My problems with many fantasy conversions, is that the characters are swamped by the plot and the average viewers need for unmitigated action. I love David's character because they are human beings to me, with thoughts, feelings, moods and reason......so much of this can be lost in translation.

Consider Druss.....it is the fact that he is an old man, with arthritis, who has lost the love of his life, that gets up and shucks of Death, who has lurked in the valley that he has farmed since his 'retirement'. He is aware that he must play 'the Hero' despite the fact that he feels in his heart that he is just a axeman, albeit a very good one. He hoes to his certain death for friendship's sake.

It would be in the interchange between characters (actors) that we must learn these things, and quite rightly, Dros, through the directorial portrail as well.

An excellent example of tremendous characterisation and acting of the level that I would hope to see, can be seen in Deadwood Season 2 Episode 6 - Swearengen (Ian McShane) is diagnosed with kidney stones....the whole episode is tremendous, but I shall recomend the final seconds, were with the mereist twitch of an eyebrow Ian McShane portrays the most complex emotions of relief / pleasure / exhaustion and a utter excruciating pain.

Such a shame this drama was cancelled.....I recommend it to all FSF readers.

Aren't we all just torturing ourselves ...most likely it will never be ...

Considering a large percentage of fantasy seems to involve torture.......why not?

That's a fair point. Though I suspect there's a difference between unrequited desire and a hot poker up the jacksie ...

True....... Hang on, I'm sure I've read that book too! LOL

You don't have to read the book, just watch The Tudors on the BBC.

I can't really see anyone but Ryan Reynolds playing Rek. Each time I read it, I see him in the role. I'm not talking about the love / comedy roles that Reynolds has played - more like his appearance in The Amytiville Horror remake and Blade 3. He has charm, is tall and well built - can play a comedic role and a serious role rather well and isnt that well known to over shadow whoever ends up being Druss.

Ryan Renalds would be perfect for this role, however I also see him as a Skilgannon, druss however like most of us i am absolutely stumped, Ray winstone perhaps if he could mask that cockney accent, its so hard to place maybe Druss just was a one of a kind man!!! sorry if this thred is a lil old ive just joined!
