I got this yesterday from Orbit and Mark has torn through more than half of the book. He is making noises that it's on par with the excellence of The Painted Man!
This is one of the best debut novels i have ever read.
The initial idea of the story seemed to capture my imagination as being abit different, the writing is very good, the pace is excellent and the characters are very believable.
definitely a good fast read, and kylar has an interesting career arc. have to note that he only remains sympathetic by judicious editing of his career - we only really see one of kylar's assassinations, and that's a man who has been committing gross fraud (IIRC). showing more of that career (rather than telling us that he has made oodles of money through killing people) would have eroded our support of him.
one minor editing note: on that jaunt just mentioned, one castle guard gets named as "Kevin" for some odd reason - the name is never mentioned again. slip-up?
i have read the whole trilogy and i must say i have not been this involved with a series since Gemmels Rigante novels. Brent Weeks will have my vote for sure!
This was by far one of the best books I have ever read and I can't wait till I get my hands on the second book next week!
Brent definantly has my vote! :)
Brent Weeks' debut novel is simply breathtaking. It's a phantastic read from the very first to the last page (and do read the acknowledgements, they're funny ;) ).
The characters' voices are clear, their personalities well defined and very interesting. Not even the characters on the sidelines, the ones only appearing for a very brief moment in the story, seem flat or uninteresting. They've all got their own voices, and each of them is interesting in his or her own way.
I got this book after reading several reviews lifting the book up into the heavens of fantasy writing, and went at it with a lot of expectations. They were all fulfilled and more.
From the very first sentence of this book till the last one there is action going on and I haven't found a boring paragraph in the whole thing. I practically devoured it. And after reading the last page I must have the following books of the series.
I loved it. I'd recommend this book to everyone, and then to some.
Weeks just wrote his way into my favourite authors.
