The David Gemmell Legend Awards

Thought that it might be a good one to get everyone warmed up with and its going to be a mega chat as to be honest with 30 titles to pick from it could end up fists at dawn over a bottle of the Old Lentrian Red. (Can't you tell where my votes going already. LOL)

Anyway, which is your favourite book by David and why?

For me its Legend, and whilst many would say that its perhaps not his best or that his later titles had more skill behind them I have to stick to his first book. I think its the passion behind the writing that gets me everytime, the fact that whilst he was waiting for test results he threw himself into this world full tilt and brought out the heroes who were scared of the dark but faced it anyway.

The way that ol Druss stalked the walls of Dros Delnoch delivering death until his own time and the way he wouldn't give in until the last. Yep, for me its the passion with which the book comes across that really still sells it to me and I think I read it around four times a year for the sheer enjoyment I get from each scene within. Damn I wish I could write like that.

my favorite books by david gemmell were the jon shannow series as they were my first introduction to his work.
i would also list waylander as one of my favorites as the character had so many levels to his personality that each rereading left me feeling like i'd descovered more of the character.

All of them!

Ok, I can't pick them all so I'll go for ... Lion of Macedon, purley because I've read it the most times :-)

I have loved all of David Gemmel's books. They've all been great page turners with great characters and lots of action. It's very hard to choose between them.

Would have to be Legend for me, its one of my "comfort" books.
Whenever I am having a rough time or the stresses of work get too much then I pull Legend off the shelf and indulge myself. Just an uplifting read!

Lion of macedon would come a close second but in truth I would hate to be separated from any of his books.
When the time came for me to decide which books would move with me to Australia I had to include the whole david gemmell collection :)

Today I finished "The First Chronicles of Druss the Legend".
It's the first book by David Gemmell I read so far.

I'M REALLY IMPRESSED!! It surpassed all my expectations. I had tears in my eyes when Rowena and Sieben died.

I definitely must read the whole DRENAI series.

Brilliant, EdiFanoB! Now you can see what all the fuss is about - DG was a true Master of the genre. Have fun reading all the series!

I asked several people for recommendation which David Gemmellbook to read first.
Finally Liz and Mark came up with the idea to read this one first.

And yes now I really know what all the fuss is about!!

Let's be REEEEEEALLY CAREFUL about spoilers, folks!

People who may not have read the book will not know or want to know who dies!

IRC, That's the short story 'Druss the Legend' that first appeared in the record breaking signing that was the 'The Drenai Tales' anthology (with the bloody awful cover). I didn't know it had been preserved in an edition of the First Chronicles. I first read it in the now long dead (and undeservedly forgotten) 'Skeleton Crew'...

Nick,
please apologise. I have been full of emotions when I wrote this comment.
Of course you are right.
Next time I will avoid to write comments after finishing a book.

I'm going to have to say, Wolf in Shadow, as this was the book that introduced me to Davids books, I only picked it off the shelf because it was signed, how shallow!

Once I had read it, I went out and bought every book available and then bought every one on day of release

Long may his Legend live on.

To be honest Mark, you'll find that youre not the first nor the last who will have done this. I also tend to think that most fans favourite book is the first one that they read as its the book that introduced David to them plus that magical first read of every book also adds to the pleasure.
