The David Gemmell Legend Awards

Very few readers have not heard of Mercedes and her writing as she has something of a cult following. Yet here she's won the nomination for her latest work released this year. What is it about Mercedes writing that you love? What makes her work a winner of the DGLA? Why should she be shortlisted?

What I love about Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar books is that the characters quickly become 'old friends' that I can read about again and again. She's also one of the only authors to bring tears to my eyes while reading a book (Magic's Price and Brightly Burning).

Foundation, however I found to be a frustrating read as most of the issues brought up are not resolved, such as case against the gem mine owners. I'm calling it a 'first book' because of that: it's obvious that there are going to be sequels in which some of the answers will be given. How many is the question. Has anyone heard?

This was my first Mercedes Lackey novel and I read it thinking it was a debut, which I didn't realise was not the case until well after I had finished it. I liked the concept but think it could have been so much better - I felt this book was rushed. I can see how the start was meant to be slow and tedious, just like the characters life and the pace changed as his life did but it just felt disjointed.
Doesn't make the top ten for me but I might check out her other stuff as other people semed to have enjoyed it.
