With an award for Fantasy, it probably has come as no suprise that Steven Erikson has been nominated. Famed for his Malazan Books of the Fallen, its for Book Eight of the series that Steven has been nominated. Heres the place to chat about Steven and his writing. What makes it a compusary buy? Why do you love the characters? What are you predicting for the future of this series?
this guy is in my opinion the closest writer to davids style we have left in the industry at the moment. i look forward to each new book in the malazan series in a way that i only ever used to do for the new gemmell novel each year.
i hope that the short stories in the malazan series eventually get a wider printing as ive been informed that they are pretty much required reading for fans of the books of the fallen.
All of his books are unmissable at the minute - the only writer whose style and narative can grip me in the way that David's has, the hours pass by with such speed that night turns to day in what seems the blink of an eye ..... or 500 pages more like ... my favourite author at the moment and only one of two writers who can share my top shelf with the Gemmell works.
I'm reading House of Chains at the moment and I'm also finding that I can spend whole days lost in Erikson's world.
I'd have to say that so far Deadhouse Gates is my fav. I have rarely become so involved in a story and felt so strongly about the characters.
I did worry that the series may start to become stale (as someother long series can) but to see book eight up for nomination, and to hear other people saying they look forward to each new book gives me great hope.
Erikson is quite simply a master. Anyone that can manage to keep his world fresh and interesting after 8 epic books deserves to be on the list in my opinion. I think the fact that the series are so epic and have so many threads and characters running through them help with this. But at no point do the series lose their plot and ramble on for a book or so ( WOT, for instance, though i do enjoy them). Personally i would like to see Erikson make the short list as his writing, style and characterisation are fantastic.
